God sent Jesus to do for you what you could not do for yourself to set you free and make you His very own.  So, then, if God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?  This is why the Church is the hope of the world!  For every single human being longs to be loved, to be valued, to belong.  And that’s what God did for you through the gospel.

Many times God puts difficult people in our lives – not to test our patience – but so we can shine the spotlight of God’s grace in their lives.  Remember, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world.”  And the way you shine your light is by peddling grace to people who need grace! Because that’s what God did for you, when He saved you.

You are not the same person you once were.  You are now different.  God sees you as a holy one, a saint.  You were a sinner. But God made you a saint.  That’s what it means to embrace your new identity in Christ.  To see yourself as God sees you.  Fully alive to Him, set-apart for Him, with unlimited potential to do the works He has prepared for you.

Jesus was very intentional about living among those who needed the gospel.  He went to their parties, ate meals in their homes, and served them in the midst of everyday life. Jesus valued every single person he encountered and so must we.  Jesus intentionally made disciples.

God has revealed His kindness and love to us in Jesus. God has given us mercy in Jesus.  God has washed us clean through Jesus. God has made us alive with Jesus. God has declared us innocent of guilt and made us totally acceptable in His presence. And now the gospel has given us a place to belong with God forever.  That’s why the good news changes everything for us.  And why everyone needs the gospel.

Once you believe in Jesus’ work for you in his death, burial and resurrection, your faith in Jesus instantly changes your standing before God.  This is why the gospel is of first importance to us now as believers.  It’s full of good news. We rest in that good news and we want to share that good news.

If Jesus’ spirit of grace is controlling the spirit within you, then no matter what you face in life, you’ll be all right.  Think about this from Paul’s perspective.  Even in prison, where everything seems to be against him, he has joy and peace, and is above it all because the grace of the Lord Jesus is with his spirit. He is thankful. He is not envious of other people’s success.  He doesn’t complain. He is free from the pull of life’s ambitions.  He’s has peace.  And He is content.

This is what the grace of God teaches us:  There is no limit to God’s grace to us in Christ Jesus.  God has an endless fountain of grace to pour out on us in Christ. Jesus is sufficient for us.  Jesus is all we need.  For it is in Jesus whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, grace and mercy, life and peace, hope and glory.

The Secret of Contentment

  • Philippians 4:10-13

Sometimes God allows crisis like the ones we are experiencing today to teach us that contentment is NOT found in our circumstances. Sometimes crisis like this ARE A GIFT, because they remind us where true satisfaction is found.  Perhaps some of you here can relate with Paul. Maybe sometime in your past you lost everything.  Maybe you experienced a tragedy that ripped your heart out.  Maybe you know what it’s like to have nothing.  But in going through some of the worst life can throw at you, YOU ARE REMINDED that you have something more precious than anything the world can offer.  You have in Jesus, and what you have in Jesus is priceless.  That’s what Paul learned as the secret of contentment: Jesus is enough!

This knowing doesn’t just happen. Knowing Jesus and becoming like Him takes effort.  Make no mistake.  Too many Christians think that just going to Church will help them become more like Jesus (and that does help).  But what we see here is that knowing Jesus is like running to win a race.  It takes training, it takes work and it takes resolve.  That’s why Paul says, “This one thing I do.”  He’s passionately pursuing a greater knowledge of Jesus with all the energy within him.
