  • Ephesians 3:8

Jesus has come to give you rest.  Rest from having to prove yourself to God.  Rest from having to measure up to some religious standards you cannot keep.  Rest from your weariness and rest from your burdens.  Rest for your soul.  And the reason Jesus is rest is found in the description he gives of Himself.  He says, Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Once you believe in Jesus’ work for you in his death, burial and resurrection, your faith in Jesus instantly changes your standing before God.  This is why the gospel is of first importance to us now as believers.  It’s full of good news. We rest in that good news and we want to share that good news.

Is there something you are holding back from God?  Is there a sin you’re treasuring, that you won’t let go?  Is there a resentment you’re harboring?  Is there an ungodly habit that you’re not giving to God?  Jesus rescued you from the dominion of darkness, but is there a part of you still walking in darkness?  God doesn’t want just part of you.  God wants all of you.  He wants you to escape the darkness.

We are linked to this same story… The same God who delivered Israel by His mighty hand is the same God who delivers us.  God delivered us by the mighty hand of Jesus: Jesus came to rescue us from this present evil age.  By His death he not only forgave us, but rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of light.  This is what Jesus did.

Jesus pursues the worst of sinners. No one is too sinful; no one is too wicked, no one is too horrible that Jesus cannot redeem. Jesus came to redeem the worst of us and the best of us. There is no difference in his eyes. That’s why there is so much hope in Jesus. He loves us all, no matter what we’ve done; no matter how awful we are; Jesus has come to give us a new start, a new life.
