The Christian is not to be characterized as someone who takes, but as someone who gives.  After all, “God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him might not perish, but have eternal life!”  Giving to help others is what makes us like God.  God is a good and generous God.  He gave His best for us.  So the point here is not so much as to be useful, but to be useful for the sake of others – to give to help others in need.

The ultimate end of following Jesus is knowing Jesus.  It’s about having a relationship with Jesus, where just being with Him is enough.  It’s about having a relationship with Jesus where you are so captivated by His beauty, and so satisfied with His love, that the things of this world lose their power over you, so that all you want is more of Jesus.

Jesus was very intentional about living among those who needed the gospel.  He went to their parties, ate meals in their homes, and served them in the midst of everyday life. Jesus valued every single person he encountered and so must we.  Jesus intentionally made disciples.

When you hold firm to the gospel, you stay connected to your power source for the Christian life.  When you hold fast to the gospel you no longer have to prove yourself to God, for you are already approved by God through Jesus.  When you hold fast to the gospel, you don’t have to keep trying to be righteous, because you are already righteous of Christ.  You no longer need to perform out of your flesh, because God is now working in you to will and to act according His good pleasure. Your power to obey, our power to live and shine like Jesus comes from holding firm to the gospel.

So his team prayed with this purpose: that every believer would be filled with this knowledge of God’s will for us in Christ.  This is a prayer God wants to answer.  So this may the most important prayer we can pray for one another.  For when we have complete certainty that Christ is all we need, then we will be free to live a life worthy of our Lord and please Him in every way.  Do you pray this way for others?  This is raising the bar in prayer.

One of the best benefits of our new union in Christ is that each one of us has the potential to change and become like Jesus. You no longer have to be controlled by selfish or sinful desires: You can experience victory over anger, greed, lust, hatred, drunkenness, discontent, anxiety and fear. The reason we can experience victory, the reason we have this potential to change because God has put His Spirit in us.

Our sin makes us equals at the foot of the cross.  It is here where our sin is forgiven.  It’s here we see ourselves in relationship to a holy God and humility is born.  When you spend time in the shadow of the cross, you are not looking down at anyone else, but looking up to the one who gave you mercy for your sin.
