  • The Gospel of John
  • Deuteronomy

You can do a lot of religious things and still miss the point about Jesus. You can enjoy powerful messages and still miss the point! You can experience great works of God and even do good works yourself and still miss the point!  You can study the Bible all you want and completely miss the point! You can live an exemplary righteous life and totally miss the point! And you can set your hopes on a religion and miss the point altogether!

God sent Jesus to do for you what you could not do for yourself to set you free and make you His very own.  So, then, if God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?  This is why the Church is the hope of the world!  For every single human being longs to be loved, to be valued, to belong.  And that’s what God did for you through the gospel.

Jesus has shown us another way:  He lived to serve others and to please the Father.  And it all started with His mindset. His mind was set on how he might give of himself not on what He could get for himself.  And so he became a Servant of All and the Savior of All.  And because of this, God made Him Lord of all.

Matthew: There’s A Place For You In God’s Story

  • Matthew 1:1-17

There is a Place for You in His Story! You see Matthew wrote this genealogy to tell us that anyone can find a place in God’s story. You may be the overlooked runt of the litter, like David; or a three-time loser, like Abraham.  You may have a disgraceful past, like Manasseh; or shameful history like Tamar, Rahab or Bathsheba.  But that’s why God chose Jesus to be the center of His story.  So that we would see that no one is outside the mercy and grace of God that’s found in Jesus.

The Bible, God’s Living Word, is not a book of rules, but a roadmap to a relationship with God. That’s what the Bible is all about.  God wants you to know Him, God wants your life to thrive and bear fruit, God wants to include you in His story. That is why God has spoken through His Son; and why the Bible is God’s love letter to you.

Rooted In the Spirit, Part 3

  • Keeping in Step with the Spirit
  • Walking by the Spirit
  • Galatians 5:16-25

How are we to “keep in step with the Spirit?” The word here refers to movement in a definite line, like in a military formation or in dancing.  In order to move in line in the military you need to submit.  In order to let someone lead you in dancing, you need to surrender, give up control trust the one who is leading you. In other words, God wants you to align your life in line with the Spirit.  And He wants us to do this continually – to make this our new habit for living – our new lifestyle.

Jesus paid it all.  We’ve been set free.  It’s of no value to live in the past and keep trying to keep proving yourself to God.  You no longer have to do this.  So stop doing it! That’s the first thing we must do to appropriate the power of our new life in Christ.  Because as long as we are trying to measure up, Christ is of no value to us.

You are now free from the fear of judgment.  You are now free from having to live up to a perfect standard gain God’s approval.  And you are now free from guilt.  For now whenever you do sin, you have an advocate before the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous one, who paid for your sin and declares you righteous.  That’s God’s grace to you in Christ Jesus, and its what makes your relationship with God absolutely secure!
