God sent to us the perfect offering for our sin – Jesus the sinless One; who became sin for us, to take our place, to receive our penalty, to remove God’s wrath and to set us free.  And the good news is that God did this all for you out of His love for you.

You see at the heart of every Christ follower is this driving passion to know Jesus, to learn His teachings, and embrace His gospel.  These first believers didn’t just add Jesus to their already busy lives, Jesus became the center of their lives.  They went to the Temple courts to hear messages about Jesus.  They met together in their homes to memorize the stories of Jesus.  Everything in the early church was founded on their passion for Jesus… They couldn’t get enough of Jesus!

The more you allow grace to do its work in you, the more the passions of the world begin to loosen their grip on you. The cravings of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the boasting of what you have and do – those things that so characterize the pursuits of the world… they are weakened and even put to death by grace.

This is the radical, all in, love of God. It’s free. It’s yours for the taking. God offers His love to you, no strings attached.  And His love is found in Jesus.  God loves you so much, that He didn’t want to confuse you.  He made salvation simple.  Just look to Jesus.  Put your trust in Jesus.  There is no greater love than Jesus. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

What manner was this power?  How was it manifested in those first followers?  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to thirst after the Word.  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to seek God constantly in prayer.  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to sell whatever they had so they could share with others in need.  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to open up their homes and include friends and neighbors in their lives.  It was the power of Christ’s love that compelled them to love one another deeply.  And it was the power who moved in their hearts to tell the good news about Jesus, to talk about the cross.

We are linked to this same story… The same God who delivered Israel by His mighty hand is the same God who delivers us.  God delivered us by the mighty hand of Jesus: Jesus came to rescue us from this present evil age.  By His death he not only forgave us, but rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of light.  This is what Jesus did.

There is only one true motive for extravagant generosity, and God has shown us what that is: Out of the abundance of love in His heart, God gave His all for us. That’s why love is at the heart of extravagant generosity. That’s why love must be the motive for why we give of our time, or our treasures or our talents, or ourselves.   All other motives are temporal. They won’t last. But love never fails.
