But now abide faith, hope, love these three… 1.     Faith    What is it? Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 1:1  How do you get it? So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Romans 10:17 Why is it important? And without faith… Read More »

“We need you.”  “We could use you.”  I remember the first time I heard those words.    I was a new student and just moving into my room on the third floor of the men’s dorm at Western Baptist College and I didn’t know anyone.  Then I met Chuck.  He was wearing his soccer gear and… Read More »

Serve Like Jesus

We are to honor those who put the needs of others  ahead of their own.  We are to honor those who are faithful to their calling. So Paul’s command to honor people like Epaphroditus is so refreshing.  For it’s usually the famous, the talented, the powerful or the beautiful who are honored today.  But in God’s realm He wants us to raise the bar on what is worthy of honor – and we’ve seen this today.  It’s faithfulness that He honors.  For He is the One who will hopefull say to us one day: “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

If Jesus had the authority to lay down his life and had authority to take up again – then you can trust in the authority of His Word.  You can count on what Jesus says.  And this should give you hope in the darkness.  For when things looked darkest for the disciples, when their world seemed to be falling apart, and when all seemed lost… Jesus rose from the grave, just as he said he would.  And if Jesus did what he said he would do by rising from the dead, you can trust him in whatever he promises.

So his team prayed with this purpose: that every believer would be filled with this knowledge of God’s will for us in Christ.  This is a prayer God wants to answer.  So this may the most important prayer we can pray for one another.  For when we have complete certainty that Christ is all we need, then we will be free to live a life worthy of our Lord and please Him in every way.  Do you pray this way for others?  This is raising the bar in prayer.

God knows what you need.  He doesn’t want you to worry, but simply ask Him to provide what you need for today, “Give us today our daily bread.”  God is our provider.  It is a misconception to think that we provide for our needs ourselves. If you have all your basic needs met today, then God has been very good to you.  God has blessed you.  He is the one who gave you the opportunity to get a good education, to do well in your career, to put food on the table and to provide a decent nest egg for retirement. Let’s not forget that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights.”  James 1:17.  If anything, if you have all you need, then you should be thankful.

A husband may give up on you, friends might abandon you, life may cave in on you, BUT GOD WILL NEVER STOP LOVING YOU. This is why there is so much hope in the love of God:  There is never a moment when you or I are not the object of God’s love! His love goes the distance. He will always be there for you.

Love Does: Love Does Selflessness

Love does not seek its own, it does not believe that “finding oneself” is the highest good,’ it is not enamored with self-gain, self-justification, self-worth or self-promotion.  You see, someone who is selfless is not looking for personal benefits by loving someone.  Someone who gives selfless love is not looking for applause, affirmation, or anything in return. There are no-strings attached to selfless love. Love does not seek its own good.
