What would God’s reset for the church look like?  I think it might look something like this:  That we would become a Gospel-centered, Jesus exalting, all hands on deck kind of Church where everyone experiences real joy, a confident faith, and deep relationships as we work together to help people become friends, family and followers of Jesus.

You are a holy one.  You bear the image of Christ!  You are a new creation. The old you is gone, and the new has come!  You are no longer your own.  You were bought with a price.  You belong to God.  I’m reminded by this new reality that God often views us much higher than we view ourselves.  When He sees you, He sees Jesus.

We need to feed our minds with thoughts worthy of who we are, and whose we are. Don’t let the world conform your thoughts, but let God transform your thoughts.  We are children of God, whose minds are being renewed my God so we might have the mind of Christ and live a life that honors Him.

  • Philippians 4:5-6

Our God provides protection for our hearts and minds in the midst of the turmoil around us.  He waits to give us His peace, and He gives it in abundance when we come to Him in prayer. So then, prayer is not always about getting what you want, it’s about God giving you what you need.  Prayer is not always about getting out of the difficulties surrounding you, but is about bringing God into your difficulties – it’s about God giving you His peace.

Rooted in the Spirit, Part Two

One of the best benefits of our new union in Christ is that each one of us has the potential to change and become like Jesus. You no longer have to be controlled by selfish or sinful desires: You can experience victory over anger, greed, lust, hatred, drunkenness, discontent, anxiety and fear. The reason we can experience victory, the reason we have this potential to change because God has put His Spirit in us.

Love Does: Love Does Selflessness

January 31, 2019

  • Larry Sundin
  • Love Does

  • Love
  • Selfishness
  • servanthood
  • Sin
  • 1 Corinthians 13:5; Romans 7:18; Ephesians 2:1-2; Romans 15:2-3; 1 Corinthians 9:19; Philippians 3:7-8; Mark 10:45; Philippians 3:12-14; Mark 8:34-36

Love does not seek its own, it does not believe that “finding oneself” is the highest good,’ it is not enamored with self-gain, self-justification, self-worth or self-promotion.  You see, someone who is selfless is not looking for personal benefits by loving someone.  Someone who gives selfless love is not looking for applause, affirmation, or anything in return. There are no-strings attached to selfless love. Love does not seek its own good.

Our sin makes us equals at the foot of the cross.  It is here where our sin is forgiven.  It’s here we see ourselves in relationship to a holy God and humility is born.  When you spend time in the shadow of the cross, you are not looking down at anyone else, but looking up to the one who gave you mercy for your sin.

Love does not seek to posses.  Love celebrates the one being loved. This is how God loves us.  He doesn’t force Himself on us.  He doesn’t control our every move.  He created us to be free. And now He wants us to love in the same way.  To celebrate the beauty of every person He created: to celebrate their gifts and talents, their accomplishments, their uniqueness as a person.

Following Jesus: What is a Disciple? part 2

But the biggest transformation Jesus makes is in our relationship with God: God is no longer some abstract, unapproachable judge. He becomes our Father, our “abba” who delights in us, sings over us, and gives us access to His presence. So with transformed affection for God we find ourselves wanting to pray, delighting in praise and growing in thanks for all He has given us in Jesus.  And as a result of this new affection, we find ourselves wanting to please Him in every way.
