Just as we have witnesses who testify in a court of law,  we have biblical witnesses who testify regarding God and His Son, Jesus Christ What we have seen with our eyes, what we beheld and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life. And the life was manifested, and we have seen and bear  witness… Read More »

God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them.  That’s what God’s grace does!  When God’s grace takes hold in your heart, it makes you a gracious person.  Giving becomes second nature.  You want to give.  You want to help because God has helped you!

Jesus died for us while we were in rebellion against God.  Jesus took our punishment on the cross while we were still enemies of God, when the only thing we deserved was eternal separation from God…  So God chose to love us when we were at our worst.  God chose to love us when there was nothing about us that was lovable.  This is the kind of love that must inform our ability to love one another.

We need to feed our minds with thoughts worthy of who we are, and whose we are. Don’t let the world conform your thoughts, but let God transform your thoughts.  We are children of God, whose minds are being renewed my God so we might have the mind of Christ and live a life that honors Him.

That’s the point God’s Word is making about a religion that works. Every person struggling to survive are human beings made in His image and likeness, and therefore they are worth more than a meal from a dumpster.  They need help.  And James says, if your religion is real, you will give them the help they need.  You will “look after” those in distress.

Faith, at the end of the day, is not about us, but about Him.  Our faith in God alone is what pleases God.  Nothing else does that. God is not looking for you to impress Him with your resume of good works.  God’s not looking for you to prove to Him how moral you are or how religious you are or how great a humanitarian you are.  He’s very clear on that. For He says right here: “Without faith it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God.”

God knows what you need.  He doesn’t want you to worry, but simply ask Him to provide what you need for today, “Give us today our daily bread.”  God is our provider.  It is a misconception to think that we provide for our needs ourselves. If you have all your basic needs met today, then God has been very good to you.  God has blessed you.  He is the one who gave you the opportunity to get a good education, to do well in your career, to put food on the table and to provide a decent nest egg for retirement. Let’s not forget that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights.”  James 1:17.  If anything, if you have all you need, then you should be thankful.

The Bible, God’s Living Word, is not a book of rules, but a roadmap to a relationship with God. That’s what the Bible is all about.  God wants you to know Him, God wants your life to thrive and bear fruit, God wants to include you in His story. That is why God has spoken through His Son; and why the Bible is God’s love letter to you.

Jesus knew we would need help to live the Christian life.  That’s why He gave us “another advocate” in the Holy Spirit. And now with His Spirit in you, you have someone to stand up for you. “The Holy Spirit is your encouraging advocate.” With His Spirit in you, you have someone to be with you.  “The Holy Spirit is your intimate companion.” With His Spirit in you, you have someone to make Jesus known to you. “The Holy Spirit is your indwelling teacher.”

Jesus paid it all.  We’ve been set free.  It’s of no value to live in the past and keep trying to keep proving yourself to God.  You no longer have to do this.  So stop doing it! That’s the first thing we must do to appropriate the power of our new life in Christ.  Because as long as we are trying to measure up, Christ is of no value to us.
