If I could, I’d like you to think of the Lord’s prayer in a whole new way. Like a little child who holds his father’s hand and doesn’t have a worry in the world, because you trust that He will not just provide for you, but care for you in every way.

If we are going to bear the fruit of goodness in through our lives: if we are going to be a blessing to others – to bless them with God’s kind of mercy, God’s kind of grace, God’s extravagant and enthusiastic generosity and kindness – then we need to not just understand God’s goodness but receive God’s goodness.

When we bear the fruit of light: with goodness, righteousness and truth, we don’t just live out our identity as children of light – we shine the light of Jesus and we bring hope. And that’s what our world needs right now. You are the light our world needs today! Every one of us who has Christ in us has this potential to shine in the darkness.

This then, is how we are to abide in Christ: We remain in His Word and Obey His Commands. When we do this, we will live in Christ and Christ will live in us. That’s how the Father has designed for us to bear much fruit. That’s how the Father has designed for us to do what we could not do on our own. When we obey God’s Word, Jesus comes alive through us! You see, the world doesn’t need you and I nearly as much as it needs the Jesus in you.

The Christian is not to be characterized as someone who takes, but as someone who gives. After all, “God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him might not perish, but have eternal life!” Giving to help others is what makes us like God. God is a good and generous God. He gave His best for us. So the point here is not so much as to be useful, but to be useful for the sake of others – to give to help others in need.

When you believe in Jesus you are no longer an object of God’s wrath, but an object of God’s mercy. You will never be separated from life with God. You will enjoy a new way of life with God, and your future will be secure with Christ forever.

We are not to be like the rest of the world who are controlled by their flesh. We are not to be controlled by our feelings, our experiences, or our passions. When we are being controlled by our feelings, we will only love those we feel like loving. When we are being controlled by our circumstances, we will only love when it might benefit us. And when we are controlled by our passions, we don’t love at all, because our passions keep us from seeing those who need the love of Christ. No, we are to be different from the world. And we can live differently from the world. That’s why Jesus sent the Holy Spirit: so we might let Him help us live and love like Jesus.
