Here we see why Jesus didn’t come when Mary and Martha wanted Him to come. Here we see disappointment transformed to delight. Jesus didn’t do for them what they wanted. He did so much more. They needed hope, and Jesus gave them hope. They needed comfort and Jesus gave them comfort. They wanted healing, but Jesus gave them something better, when He called Lazarus forth from the grave, He put to end our greatest fear, the fear of death.

And if Jesus did what he said he would do by rising from the dead, you can trust him in whatever he promises.

At some point anyone who takes a good hard look at who Jesus is must draw a conclusion about Jesus. After all, if Jesus is just a teacher, then how can he forgive sins? And if he’s just a good moral example, how can he raise the dead? And if he’s simply a prophet, then how can he feed the multitudes with just two fish and five loaves?

That’s why the resurrection changes everything. For when you receive Jesus you receive His Spirit. And when you receive His Spirit, you receive the power to live this new life of grace, truth, hope and love. And this is what our world needs today.
