Here we see why Jesus didn’t come when Mary and Martha wanted Him to come. Here we see disappointment transformed to delight. Jesus didn’t do for them what they wanted. He did so much more. They needed hope, and Jesus gave them hope. They needed comfort and Jesus gave them comfort. They wanted healing, but Jesus gave them something better, when He called Lazarus forth from the grave, He put to end our greatest fear, the fear of death.

Jesus is more than what meets the eye! To these Jews all they saw was a man who was a blasphemer and worthy of death. But to those who have ears to hear, Jesus is proclaiming the good news of God. The Father dedicated the Son and sent Him to us to be the meeting place between God and man. He is God who became man and is now worthy of worship.

Jesus declares in this passage the good news of eternal life is found in Him. He declares right here that, I am the giver of life. I am the only one who truly satisfies. I am the bread of life. If you come to me, you will never go hungry. If you believe in me, you will never be thirsty. I will never drive you away. I will never let you go. And I will raise you up the last day.

We are not left with the idea that Jesus is just one of many ways to get to heaven. He does not leave us that option. In fact, Jesus is crystal clear that He is the way to receive eternal life. He is the central figure in the salvation of all mankind. For not only does Jesus have the power to give life, but He has the power to determine your eternal destiny.

This is how much Jesus loves the Church: He adopts us, saves us, creates new life in us, so He can be with us and live among us. We are not just His family, we are His home! Let this truth sink in: The Church was created by Jesus for Jesus. That’s why Jesus loves His Church. That’s why He’s all about us. We are His dwelling place.
