We all delight in taking delight. That’s how God made us. So, if you think about it, if God made us to experience delight and God gave us all this great stuff to delight in, then maybe He’s worth taking delight in!

Sometimes your journey of faith will be a lonely journey. Abraham has no companions to encourage him; no friends who understood what God was asking of him. All he had to go on was a lifetime of God’s faithfulness to him. And sometimes that’s all we will have. Sometimes God may put you in a place where you’ve got no one to trust but Him.

At times of great distress we need to be reminded of God’s promises to us. God is encouraging Abraham with hope. Things may look bleak right now. You may feel helpless right now. You may even want to scream out and say, ”You don’t know how I feel right now. You don’t know how miserable I am.” You only see the darkness. You don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our bond is not found in our shared experience of coming to worship services, being part of a Journey Group or some other kind of religious activity. That’s not what binds us together. That’s not what makes us different. What makes us different is our forgiveness found in our faith in Jesus. For once we are forgiven God puts His Spirit in us. We are forgiven forever, perfected by Jesus to be the dwelling place of His Spirit.

This story should give us pause. It should make us think twice about doing an end run on God’s will. It should make us think twice about the disappointments and delays we face in life. God had a good reason for delaying the child of promise through Abram. And God just may have a good reason for delaying some of His purposes in your life.

Today we live with a lot of uncertainty. Our economy is fickle. Our future as a great nation is not guaranteed. Even our Christian faith regularly comes under attack. These things can make us fearful. But God says to us over and over again in Scripture: Do not fear, I am your shield and your very great reward. His presence calms our fears. His peace shields our hearts. His love for us is perfect. And His perfect love drives out all fear. With Him we are safe, no matter what the future holds.
