There is no greater joy than to help someone become a follower of Jesus Christ – to see their eyes opened by the truth, to see the weight of sin removed, to see the joy of God’s peace enter their hearts. I got to experience that joy this week. I had the privilege of sharing the good news of Jesus with someone this week who is no longer lost. He’s been found by Jesus and included in His family.

But the biggest transformation Jesus makes is in our relationship with God: God is no longer some abstract, unapproachable judge. He becomes our Father, our “abba” who delights in us, sings over us, and gives us access to His presence. So with transformed affection for God we find ourselves wanting to pray, delighting in praise and growing in thanks for all He has given us in Jesus.  And as a result of this new affection, we find ourselves wanting to please Him in every way.

You no longer have to be defined by your mistakes, your selfishness or your sins. You don’t have to live there anymore. Leave it behind and go with God into the new life He gives you:a life where you can be your true self – a life where you are free to live as His beloved and love others as God has loved you.  This is why Jesus set you free – not so you can do what you’ve always wanted to do – but so you can now do what you were created to do – to bring God glory!

God’s faithfulness to us is dependent upon His character. And that’s good news.  We are prone to wander, even though we’ve been delivered from the power of the flesh by the blood of Christ, the flesh in us still works to reclaim its power over us.  The flesh in us still wants to lead us, call the shots and get us to live by the flesh rather than by faith. So sometimes we will sin, sometimes we might even walk away from God for a season.  But God will never walk away from us.

Our Problem: We come into Christianity by receiving Jesus Christ by faith, but then we try to live this new life OUT OF OUR OWN ABILITY and STRENGTH. And when we do that we fail. We try to love but we can’t. We try to be kind but sometimes we don’t really feel like it. We try to not get angry, but we lose our cool. And then we feel like we’ve let God down; so we try again. But we fail again and again and again. And eventually we find it’s TOO HARD to live this new life, so we stop trying. Oh a part of you still wishes you could live this new life, but you’ve figured it’s just not worth the aggravation or disappointment. And if that’s where you find yourself this morning, then I have some good news for you. You are right! You can’t live this new life, but Jesus can.

  • Galatians 5:16-25

Learning to walk by the Spirit IS A PROCESS. We don’t become proficient at this overnight. And this certainly doesn’t happen by osmosis. It takes an active choice of the will. We choose to obey. We choose to follow the way of the Spirit. It’s a moment-by-moment choosing. But the more we TRAIN OURSELVES to walk by the Spirit, the more the Spirit will work in us to transform us so we will begin to live and love like Jesus.
