When God established His Church, He knew we would face difficulties that would discourage us, adversities that would seek to derail us, and people who would disappoint us.  And God knew there would be times we would struggle with our commitment to His family, the Church.  But God never promised that following Him would be easy.  So like Churchill, He would have us never give in to anything, great or small, large or petty – but that we would stand firm with God’s people no matter what.

Counterfeit passions can quench God’s Spirit in us.  They don’t give our hearts the satisfaction it desires.  So what must we do?  We must allow our hearts to be rekindled by God’s indwelling Holy Spirit.  That’s what Paul means when he writes, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor.” And so we ask, how do we do that? The answer is simple: We need to turn up the heat of God’s Holy Spirit in our lives.

These are brief descriptions of the grace God wants to unleash through us.  God has designed His Church to be a community of grace, where each one of us is a peddler of grace to everyone in God’s family.  And He gives us what we need to pull this off!  He gives us spiritual gifts.

We all belong to Jesus, and we all belong to one another.  That means every single Christ-follower is significant and necessary.  I need you and you need me.  We all need each other.  And since God’s Word says you are a member of Christ’s body, your life now has tremendous significance.  Now, because the grace and love of Jesus Christ is in you, and God wants His grace and love to flow through you to bless, heal and help others.

The more God’s Word gets in us, the more the Spirit of God renews every part of our brokenness.  He purifies our corrupted values.  He straightens our crooked understandings.  He fills our empty longings.  And He delivers on His promises. And as His Spirit works in us and renews us He give us this new ability: the ability to test and approve God’s will. And with that new ability we are now able to discern, appreciate and put God’s will into practice in our everyday lives. And as we do that, as we test and approve God’s will in our lives, will come to the place where we see that everything God wants for our lives is GOOD, PLEASING AND PERFECT.

  • Romans 12:1

If you give your all to God as a living sacrifice, you make yourself available for God to use wherever your feet may take you.  If you give your self moment by moment through out each day, you will free your self from a compartmentalized faith.  You will now walk with Him throughout your day. When you give your mind, it will become more attuned to what God is doing.  Your lips will become instruments of grace and truth.  Your tongue will bring encouragement, healing and life. Your hands will be available to lift up the fallen.  Your arms will give comfort to the lonely and broken. Your ears will become attuned to the cries of the distressed. And your eyes will begin to see everyone in light of eternity…

This is how much Jesus loves the Church:  He adopts us, saves us, creates new life in us, so He can be with us and live among us.  We are not just His family, we are His home!  Let this truth sink in: The Church was created by Jesus for Jesus.  That’s why Jesus loves His Church. That’s why He’s all about us. We are His dwelling place.

  • James 4:13-18

Spiritual adultery is a poison in the church.  Putting your interests ahead of God’s and treating God like a vending machine is the same as being God’s enemy.  Imagine, if that’s how your child treated you: If your son or daughter only came to you for what they could get from you?  How would that make you feel?  How does it make you feel when someone befriends you so they can get something from you?  It’s manipulating, insulting, it’s demeaning, and ungodly.

True wisdom is the ability to put the knowledge of God’s will to work in your life in a way that it impacts others for good.  And it’s observable.  You can tell if someone has a wisdom that works if their faith is actively benefiting another believer.
