God knows what you need.  He doesn’t want you to worry, but simply ask Him to provide what you need for today, “Give us today our daily bread.”  God is our provider.  It is a misconception to think that we provide for our needs ourselves. If you have all your basic needs met today, then God has been very good to you.  God has blessed you.  He is the one who gave you the opportunity to get a good education, to do well in your career, to put food on the table and to provide a decent nest egg for retirement. Let’s not forget that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights.”  James 1:17.  If anything, if you have all you need, then you should be thankful.

Rooted In Prayer: Pray Like Jesus

June 10, 2019

  • Larry Sundin
  • Rooted
  • Matthew
  • Prayer
  • Matthew 6:9-13

Jesus gave us access to the Father so we could speak to Him as His child. This is our great advantage.  For we have a great Father who loves us.  We have a Father who is greater than anything in this world that’s weighing on us. And we have a Father who wants to change our world through us.  And all we need is to come to Him in prayer.  This is our privilege!

  • Ephesians 3:15-21

What Paul is praying for here is transformation.  That we would be changed by the love of Christ ourselves. That the more we experience Christ’s love in our own lives, the more we will be filled with the love of Christ.  And when we are filled with the love of Christ, we become love.  That’s the goal: that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  For God is love!

What manner was this power?  How was it manifested in those first followers?  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to thirst after the Word.  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to seek God constantly in prayer.  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to sell whatever they had so they could share with others in need.  It was the power of the Holy Spirit who moved them to open up their homes and include friends and neighbors in their lives.  It was the power of Christ’s love that compelled them to love one another deeply.  And it was the power who moved in their hearts to tell the good news about Jesus, to talk about the cross.

God is always there for us watching over us, even in our sleep. He’s always looking out for our best interests. He’s always watching to protect us. I don’t know about you, but knowing this about my God gives me comfort. It helps me to realize I have nothing to fear and I’ll never be alone. The eyes of God are on me to prosper me and not to harm me. That’s good news.

If I understand Jesus’ words correctly here: “to go and bear fruit that will last”   He means for us to go and to live the life Jesus would live if He were you. This is the potential Jesus gives us to turn our world upside down – the potential to truly make a difference with our lives.

God’s mercy toward Jacob is a reminder of God’s mercy to us. For just as He chose to bless Jacob by giving him mercy, God has done the same for us: He loved us before we were born and chose to bless us by making us heirs with Christ. We didn’t do anything to deserve this. God did it all for us, even when we were still sinners. And God is still loving and merciful today. And that’s good news. Because that means that no one is too sinful who God cannot save.

Our bond is not found in our shared experience of coming to worship services, being part of a Journey Group or some other kind of religious activity. That’s not what binds us together. That’s not what makes us different. What makes us different is our forgiveness found in our faith in Jesus. For once we are forgiven God puts His Spirit in us. We are forgiven forever, perfected by Jesus to be the dwelling place of His Spirit.
