If you are building your identity on who you are as God’s child; if you are building your relationship with the One who will never leave you nor forsake you; if you are building your identity as the child of the Almighty God who brings princes to naught, who reduces the rulers to nothing – then the next time someone tries to criticize you, intimidate you, or oppose you – you will not cower nor crumble, but you’ll stand confidently because you will know Him who is with you and for you.

You are His beloved child now and forever. This is not wishful thinking, but an eternal reality. It has always been God’s plan to make you His child. That’s the whole point of God adopting you as His very own child the moment you believe in Jesus. He makes you His child. It’s His choice. The choice to make you His own rests entirely on the Father’s great love for you.

That’s Just Not Right! Have you heard yourself voice that refrain of late? That’s just not right. In the State I come from, Oregon; the Governor wrote a bill to fine people during thanksgiving if they had more than six people for dinner. That’s just not right. You are a holy one. You bear the image of Christ! You are a new creation. The old you is gone, and the new has come! You are no longer your own. You were bought with a price. You belong to God. I’m reminded by this new reality that God often views us much higher than we view ourselves. When He sees you, He sees Jesus.

Jesus paid it all. We’ve been set free. It’s of no value to live in the past and keep trying to keep proving yourself to God. You no longer have to do this. So stop doing it! That’s the first thing we must do to appropriate the power of our new life in Christ. Because as long as we are trying to measure up, Christ is of no value to us.

If we see ourselves as works in process, GRACE will always characterize our relationships. You, see the one thing the world doesn’t see enough from us is grace. Sure, they expect us to judge them, they expect us to moralize them – but if this identity begins to shape how you live, you will never judge nor moralize anyone, because when you are following Jesus, when you keep your focus on Jesus… you will know that you are far… far… far from perfect.

Jacob prays out of his relationship with God, the God who is for him. He comes to Him in humility and asks nothing more from God then do what He promises. He gives credit to God for all he has. And he’s honest: He admits his fears to God. Oh that we’d learn to be this honest with God like this: to pour out our fears, our burdens, our doubts – whatever. Jacob literally lays all his burdens at the feet of God. Jacob’s knows he’s come out of the frying pan and into the fire, and only God can rescue him. This is a great prayer… and it’s the kind of prayer God loves to answer.
