Peace – the longing of our hearts! Perhaps the greatest longing we have as we reflect of the coming of Jesus at Christmas. For our hearts and minds are under assault today. We are troubled by guilt and worry, we are filled with uncertainties, confusion and even fear when we are faced with an uncontainable Ebola epidemic in Africa, the senseless beheading of innocents in Syria, and this spiraling racial unrest in our own backyard. It seems as though our world is spinning out of control. All these things threaten our peace. But then we remember the promise of Jesus…
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. Isaiah 9:6-7
We are reminded that there is one who’s peace can bring hope to our world. This is what the angels announced that first Christmas: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:13-14
God’s peace descended to man through the birth of a child, not through the sword. His peace is now spread everywhere this child is received. Jesus is the hope for peace in our world. Jesus is the ultimate peacemaker.
This is his promise to those who believe: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
Paul reminds of this unique peace of God, and how it is available to anyone who prays: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
God wants to protect your heart from the worries and uncertainties of life. He wants you to experience a peace that goes beyond our understanding. This Advent, let us remember that Jesus is God’s gift of peace:
Jesus is the prince of peace.
Who’s ruling peace will never cease.
For announced that night throughout the land
A peace child born for every man.
Who offers His peace, no worldly thing.
Dispelling our troubles and fears.
and Who gives us peace
when we release
our hearts to Him in prayer.
