The ultimate end of following Jesus is knowing Jesus.  It’s about having a relationship with Jesus, where just being with Him is enough.  It’s about having a relationship with Jesus where you are so captivated by His beauty, and so satisfied with His love, that the things of this world lose their power over you, so that all you want is more of Jesus.

If a Savior was born for these shepherds, then anyone who has no hope, can how have hope with Jesus.  For the good news is that this Savior was born for ANYONE who needs a Savior.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve never darkened a church door.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve spent all your life far from God.  It doesn’t matter how worthless you feel or how sinful you’ve been. God’s message of good news is for YOU, personally.

The good news of the kingdom is that God favor’s those who are lowly in heart.  It is this poverty of spirit, this conscious awareness of unworthiness before God, that opens the floodgates of God’s mercy. For when we’re totally honest and confess we are indeed sinful and in need of God, this is where blessing begins.

We don’t choose Jesus.  Jesus chooses us.  Jesus comes into our world of darkness.  He comes to deliver us, to rescue us, to save us.  Left to ourselves we will not seek a relationship with God.  In our darkness we will choose sin over God; every time.

When anyone comes to faith in Jesus, Jesus changes everything.  With Jesus we don’t have to worry about the future.  With Jesus we don’t have to worry about who’s in charge.  With Jesus we don’t have to fear evil.  And with Jesus we can have joy no matter what’s happening in our world.

Once you believe in Jesus’ work for you in his death, burial and resurrection, your faith in Jesus instantly changes your standing before God.  This is why the gospel is of first importance to us now as believers.  It’s full of good news. We rest in that good news and we want to share that good news.

If Jesus’ spirit of grace is controlling the spirit within you, then no matter what you face in life, you’ll be all right.  Think about this from Paul’s perspective.  Even in prison, where everything seems to be against him, he has joy and peace, and is above it all because the grace of the Lord Jesus is with his spirit. He is thankful. He is not envious of other people’s success.  He doesn’t complain. He is free from the pull of life’s ambitions.  He’s has peace.  And He is content.

This is what the grace of God teaches us:  There is no limit to God’s grace to us in Christ Jesus.  God has an endless fountain of grace to pour out on us in Christ. Jesus is sufficient for us.  Jesus is all we need.  For it is in Jesus whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, grace and mercy, life and peace, hope and glory.

The Secret of Contentment

  • Philippians 4:10-13

Sometimes God allows crisis like the ones we are experiencing today to teach us that contentment is NOT found in our circumstances. Sometimes crisis like this ARE A GIFT, because they remind us where true satisfaction is found.  Perhaps some of you here can relate with Paul. Maybe sometime in your past you lost everything.  Maybe you experienced a tragedy that ripped your heart out.  Maybe you know what it’s like to have nothing.  But in going through some of the worst life can throw at you, YOU ARE REMINDED that you have something more precious than anything the world can offer.  You have in Jesus, and what you have in Jesus is priceless.  That’s what Paul learned as the secret of contentment: Jesus is enough!

Jesus has shown us another way:  He lived to serve others and to please the Father.  And it all started with His mindset. His mind was set on how he might give of himself not on what He could get for himself.  And so he became a Servant of All and the Savior of All.  And because of this, God made Him Lord of all.
