“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” There’s nothing God won’t do for you. He gives you more than you ever deserve. He helps you when you cannot help yourself. He refuses to let your offenses keep Him from loving you. For He loves you with His steadfast love.

Mercy led Jesus to lay down His life, so that now, anyone who puts their trust in him will receive the mercy of God. They will be forgiven and set free from a life of sin and given life with God. It’s no wonder then, that Jesus blesses the merciful. For when you are merciful you are acting most like God, who is rich in mercy.

We are to honor those who put the needs of others ahead of their own. We are to honor those who are faithful to their calling. So Paul’s command to honor people like Epaphroditus is so refreshing. For it’s usually the famous, the talented, the powerful or the beautiful who are honored today. But in God’s realm He wants us to raise the bar on what is worthy of honor – and we’ve seen this today. It’s faithfulness that He honors. For He is the One who will hopefull say to us one day: “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

That’s the good news of God’s mercy. Out of the abundance of God’s blessing comes the gift of God’s mercy to us in Jesus. He delivers us from the consequences of our sin. He takes away our guilt and shame. He makes us righteous and gives us a new life. That’s the gospel.

No one is too damaged or too far-gone for Jesus. And that makes Jesus our greatest hope: He will never give up on you. He will never throw you away. He will never let you go. This is our Jesus, the Hero of our story. He is always for us, never against us.

God is a defender of the fatherless. He draws near the brokenhearted. He gives mercy and compassion to the poor. He loves the immigrant. He lifts up the downtrodden. God cares for the vulnerable. And He loves those who do the same.

God is not absent from the pain and suffering of our world. He did not just get this world going and leave it to its own devices. He cares about the injustice, evil and moral decay that is spiraling out of control in our land. He hears the anguished cries of wives who’ve lost their spouses, of children who’ve lost their fathers, of brothers and sisters like you and me who grieve over evil, who fear for their children and grandchildren. God hears when we cry out to Him over sin and evil. And because He hears, there is hope….
